Jagex has canceled RuneScape Reignited, a controversial MMO reset project, less than two weeks after its October 3 announcement at RuneFest 2026. Associate creative director Mod Ryan cited intense player backlash regarding split economies and separate subscriptions as the direct reason for dropping the December 2 release.
Jagex Pulls the Plug After Intense Player Backlash
The developer confirmed on October 15, 2026, that the soft-reset initiative named RuneScape Reignited is dead. Originally unveiled during RuneFest 2026 as an ambitious attempt to give both new and lapsed players a clean slate with fresh high scores and a separate economy, the project drew immediate criticism from veteran players.
Critics argued that forking the servers would fracture an already modest player base and force users to pay for a separate subscription. Just days after the initial reveal, the studio attempted to walk back certain restrictions, floating ideas like letting existing members carry achievements over to a Reignited character. Those adjustments failed to quell the discontent.

Associate creative director Ryan Philpott had previously outlined the relaunch project, explaining that it intended to build upon the Road to Restoration program targeting outdated systems, remastered content, and early-game improvements. Jagex had planned to revisit iconic introductory content like Dragon Slayer, Demon Slayer, Vampyre Slayer, and Tutorial Island to align the early experience with modern gameplay standards. Alongside these efforts, the studio also announced RuneScape 4 during the convention.
It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it. Our goal is to see Runescape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community.

Avoiding the Ghosts of the Evolution of Combat
For Jagex, the decision to scrap the update stemmed from a painful corporate memory.

It is super important to us because the last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that.

That historic misstep left the studio hyper-sensitive to community revolt.
The Dec 2 Free Trial and 2027 Roadmap Go Ahead
While Reignited is scrapped, the wider development schedule remains active. Jagex is proceeding with its December 2 update, which introduces an Adventure Guide and the first installment of the Remastered Journey.

To help bridge the gap left by the canceled relaunch, the studio is launching a 10-day free trial that runs from December 2 to December 12. During this window, brand-new accounts or any character that has not held an active membership since June 2 can freely explore RuneScape members’ worlds and content.
Meanwhile, the rest of the 2027 roadmap unveiled at the convention remains entirely untouched by the cancellation, ensuring that development continues on core modernizations without split servers.
