And jaguar was captured on video in it Naachtún Dos Lagunas Biotope, located north of Petén. The Guatemalan conservationist Francisco Asturias had the opportunity to capture these beautiful images that give us a moment in the life of the largest feline in America, traveling through Guatemalan territory. What a chilero!
These sightings are very special, although we have seen several videos this year, it is not always possible to see these animals in their natural habitat.
Jaguar in its habitat is captured in the Naachtún Dos Lagunas Biotope
In a unique and exciting experience, Francisco Asturias managed to capture in video an incredible sighting of a jaguar 25 meters away in the Naachtún Dos Lagunas Biotope, Peten. This amazing encounter took place on April 15, just a few weeks after Asturias recorded a puma in the same location. What a chilero!
The Guatemalan, who has served as director of the Petén chapter of the Foundation for Ecodevelopment and Conservation – FUNDAECO – for a decade, shared the experience with enthusiasm. For Asturias, who considers photographing wild animals one of his hobbies, encountering this feline was like “winning the lottery,” given how rare these sightings are.
The conservationist reported that he was monitoring wild boars when he came across the majestic feline. At a safe distance of approximately 25 meters and wearing appropriate clothing so as not to attract the attention of the animals, Asturias managed to capture the jaguar on video as it roamed the area, stopping occasionally before disappearing behind a bush.
He video of the sighting not only highlights the beauty and biodiversity of Guatemala, but also the importance of protecting and conserving natural areas such as the Naachtún Dos Lagunas Biotope. Asturias emphasized that this meeting is a reminder of the importance of preserving natural habitats to guarantee the survival of emblematic species.

Asturias also shared another fascinating video captured by camera traps, in which several of these cats are observed cooling off in plastic water bowls. These waterers, installed as part of a conservation project, provide water to a variety of animals, including deer, tapirs, pumas and birds.
The project has installed 9 plastic waterers with a capacity of 180 gallons, ensuring that the animals have access to water. Asturias noted that, although at first the animals approached cautiously, over time they have lost their fear and now approach with confidence, demonstrating the positive impact of these conservation initiatives on the region’s wildlife.
The jaguar sighting and the activity in the plastic water troughs are moving testimonies to the natural wealth of Guatemala and the importance of protecting and conserving its unique ecosystems for future generations.
