Surya’s production, acting and Gnanavell directed ‘Jay Beam’ was released to great acclaim. Surya has produced this film based on a real incident that took place in Cuddalore in 1994. The film was well received. However, in the real crime scene, it was Sub-Inspector Anthony Samy who staged the gruesome human rights violation of Rajakannu. But the renaming of his character as Kurumurthy was also controversial. Some have questioned whether the names of the characters like Rajakkannu, Perumalsamy and Chandru have not been changed and only the name of the culprit has not been changed.
