Jake Dixon Unscathed After High-Speed Jerez Crash As Honda Clears Barrier

Dover rider Jake Dixon suffered a high-speed crash during Friday practice at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain, bringing an abrupt end to his session after his Honda was hurled over the track barrier. The incident comes as the Superbike rookie closes out an injury-hit 2026 championship campaign.

Honda’s upward trajectory through the latter portion of the 2026 Superbike World Championship has brought consistent top-15 finishes into reach for both factory riders, Jake Dixon and Somkiat Chantra. While Chantra has also found regular points, Dixon has delivered the garage’s standout moments. The former Moto2 racer charged from 17th on the grid into the top nine during the sprint race at Cremona before taking sixth in the second race for his season-best finish. A week prior, the 30-year-old secured an eighth-place finish in the Superpole race at Estoril in Portugal.

High-Speed Crash at Turn 9 Cuts Jerez Practice Short

The Circuito de Jerez has presented a steeper challenge for the CBR1000RR platform. Dixon opened Friday morning with a 12th-place finish in FP1, sitting 1.4 seconds off the pace. The afternoon session, however, ended prematurely when the Honda rider went down hard after 13 minutes.

Dixon lost control at the notorious Turn 9. His machine tumbled through the gravel trap several times before launching high into the air and coming down behind the airfence. Although the rider emerged from the wreckage unhurt, the machine sustained extensive damage that could not be repaired during the session, limiting him to just seven laps in FP2.

To be honest, it wasn’t the Friday we’d hoped for. After the first practice session, we had a lot of work ahead of us. In the afternoon, I was trying to improve my lap time when I had a pretty heavy crash at Turn 9. It all happened quite quickly, but luckily I’m fine, even though I’m obviously not happy about it.

The curtailed afternoon running cost the team valuable track time, preventing the garage from evaluating items on their testing schedule. Dixon noted that the team is still searching for necessary pace as the season reaches its final weekend.

Unfortunately, that was the end of my session, so we lost valuable time on the track and didn’t have the chance to try out everything on our list. We’re struggling to find the pace we need. It’s frustrating because I know we’re capable of more. We’ll sit down this evening, analyse the data and see what we can do to improve the situation. It’s the final round and I definitely want to finish on a positive note.

Estoril Struggles Set the Stage for the Season Finale

The crash in Spain follows a demanding weekend at Estoril where Dixon battled tire degradation during Sunday competition. After placing seventh in grid qualifying for race one with a lap of 1min34.788sec, a sluggish start dropped him to 14th before he fought back to finish 12th. Nicolo Bulega claimed victory in that outing.

Sunday’s Superpole race proved more productive, allowing the Kent rider to maintain his starting position and secure an eighth-place finish. That performance set him up on the third row for race two, though managing the machine over longer distances remained an uphill battle.

[The] Superpole race was good enough, at least to keep the third row start later, but I knew race two was going to be difficult. After an adequate start I lost a few places but was able to stick with the guys ahead for a while. With about eight laps to go, the front tyre was already finished, and I started losing ground to the group ahead.

Dixon reported losing approximately three and a half seconds across four or five laps during the second race at Estoril. A major braking error at turn seven nearly sent him off the circuit entirely as he struggled to haul the bike down from speed, ultimately dropping back before recovering to finish 10th and collect six championship points.

Chasing Solutions Ahead of Sunday’s Final Flag

The cumulative toll of an injury-hit campaign has left the Honda squad pushing its equipment to the limit. Dixon made clear that current results do not match his ambitions as he prepares for the final races of the championship.

We are getting the maximum out of our current package, but we still have a lot of work to do. I don’t want to be finishing in these positions, because that’s not what I came here for. Hopefully, between now and Jerez, we can find some solutions and take another step forward.

With Friday’s data analysis underway following the heavy accident at Turn 9, the team faces a tight turnaround to ready the Fireblade for the remaining sessions of the weekend’s final round.
