Jake Reiner’s anguish began on December 14, 2025, when his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, were found brutally stabbed in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home. At the time, Jake was at Union Station for a celebration of life event for a friend when his sister Romy called. I screened it because I thought, at the time, I’m in the middle of something, you know, I’ll call her back,
he recalled. And then she called immediately again, and I knew at that point that something was wrong.
Romy informed him that their father was dead and that they couldn’t find their mother. I immediately went into shock,
Jake said, describing the moment as the most surreal thing I’ve ever seen.
The Los Angeles Police Department identified Nick Reiner, 32, as a prime suspect in the case. Jake, who had previously worked as a news reporter, said nothing prepared him for the reality of his parents’ murder. As a reporter, I did it for 10 years; I came up on crime scenes all the time,
he said. But when it’s your crime scene, a crime scene at your childhood home, it’s like the most surreal thing I’ve ever seen.
Nick, who has a history of drug addiction and mental health struggles, was later indicted on murder charges with special allegations of committing multiple murders and lying in wait, making him eligible for life without parole or the death penalty if convicted.
Jake described the past eight months as an emotional rollercoaster, oscillating between eight years at the same time
and “eight minutes.” Every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality,
he said. The grief has manifested as anger, which he attributes to the helplessness of the situation. It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened. I didn’t get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter,
he said. Jake also confirmed that he has not commented on Nick’s attempts to access a $1.5 million trust fund to pay for his legal defense, a move KABC reported he has avoided discussing.
A Fractured Family and Unanswered Questions
Jake’s parents had long struggled to support Nick, who co-wrote the 2015/2016 film “Being Charlie” with Rob Reiner. The movie, which depicted a young man’s battle with addiction, was loosely based on Nick’s own experiences. My parents had unconditional love for all three of us,
Jake said. I can tell you they never stopped wanting to help him. They never stopped helping him.
However, the film also highlighted the challenges of their relationship. I think that project was a way for my dad to try and connect with him,

The Reiner family’s tragedy has also drawn attention to Nick’s legal proceedings. He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges, and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15, just a day after his 33rd birthday. Jake has remained silent on the case, declining to discuss his brother’s legal status or his own potential involvement in the proceedings. I feel like that’s something I don’t really want to answer right now,
he said when asked about his surprise at learning Nick was a suspect.
A Public Appearance and the Road Ahead
In a rare public moment, Jake and Romy made their first appearance together since the tragedy on August 2 at Dodger Stadium, where they participated in a ceremonial first pitch. The event held deep significance for their father, who had been a lifelong Dodgers fan. It was an emotional thing that we did.
I don’t know if I really could take in the moment, because everything happened kind of fast, but I was really happy that we got to do that,
Jake said.
As the legal process unfolds, Jake has focused on processing his grief and maintaining his parents’ legacy. I do feel responsible for making sure people know them and they remember them,
he said. However, the emotional weight of the past eight months remains. It’s been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time,
