Jake White Becomes Fiji Head Coach After 30 Applicants Apply

The Fiji Rugby Union has appointed former Springboks head coach Jake White to lead the Flying Fijians through the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. White, who replaces interim coach Senirusi Seruvakula, secured the role after a competitive selection process involving over 30 applicants, marking his first international head coaching position since 2007.

Jake White Returns to International Rugby as Fiji Coach

Jake White’s return to the international arena follows a long career in club rugby, including roles with the Brumbies, Sharks, Montpellier, Toyota Verblitz, and the Bulls. His appointment concludes a search initiated after the departure of Mick Byrne in April 2026.

White arrives at the helm of the Pacific Island nation having held top roles in Australia, South Africa, France and Japan. He also led the Under-21 Springbok side to victory in the Under-21 World Cup in 2002.

“Today marks an important new chapter in the history of Fiji Rugby. In appointing Jake White, we are bringing a Rugby World Cup-winning coach into a nation where rugby is more than a sport, it is part of who we are.”

John Sanday, Fiji Rakavi Football Union Chairman

White, who led South Africa to victory in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, expressed a commitment to balancing the traditional flair of Fijian rugby with the discipline required to compete against top-tier nations. He will oversee the broader high-performance structure, including pathways for the Fiji Under-20 and Fijian Drua programs. He beat a strong field of candidates for the job, including Warren Gatland and Shaun Edwards.

White Aims to Combine Fijian Identity with Structural Rigor

While White has been described as a schoolboy disciplinarian who rules his teams like a headmaster, he stated that he intends to protect the unique identity of Fijian rugby rather than overhaul it. His stated goal is to integrate these traditional strengths with the structural rigor that characterizes successful international sides.

“I am not coming to Fiji to change what makes Fijian rugby special. I want to protect that identity, strengthen it and combine it with the structures, discipline and winning habits that will allow these players to express their talents on the biggest stage.”

White has a track record of making almost immediate improvements wherever he has coached. He understands that this is a nation that has shown it can challenge the world’s rugby powers. His tenure is expected to focus on building on the foundation set by his predecessors to turn raw potential into consistent performances.

Preparation for the 2027 Rugby World Cup

Looking toward the 2027 tournament in Australia, the team has been drawn into a pool alongside Argentina, Spain, and Canada.

A significant highlight of the build-up is a confirmed warm-up match against South Africa, scheduled for 18 September 2027. The match, titled Contest on the Coast, will take place at Polytec Stadium in Gosford, Australia, with a 6 pm AEST kick-off.

Whether White remains in charge beyond the tournament is uncertain, but the move could be cataclysmic or a strategic shift that takes Fiji into another stratosphere.
