The government alleged that BNP and Jamaat-Shibir were involved in the destruction of various government facilities including the state broadcaster BTV, Banani’s Setu Bhavan, Mohakhali’s disaster management building, metro rail station, and others.
In view of that, on Monday (July 29) in the meeting of 14 parties led by the ruling Awami League, the decision was passed unanimously when the participating parties proposed to ban Jamaat-Shibir.
After the meeting that day, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that BNP-Jamaat is involved in a conspiracy to make the country ineffective through anarchy. It was unanimously decided to ban Jamaat-Shibir in a meeting of 14 parties to eliminate anti-national evil forces in national interest.
Jamaat took a stand against the independence of Bangladesh in the 1971 war of liberation. Former Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami of the party has been sentenced in the case of the International Criminal Tribunal for war crimes. After the trial in the special tribunal formed, five leaders including Matiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, Abdul Quader Mollah and Mohammad Kamaruzzaman were executed.
Jamaat was termed as a ‘criminal organisation’ in the verdict in Jamaat Amir Professor Ghulam Azam’s case. According to the International Criminal Tribunal, Jamaat is a criminal organization. Their role in 1971 was against the country’s interest.
Incidentally, Jamaat was banned in Bangladesh from 1972 to 1977. Jamaat became active again in the politics of the country after various political changes. In 1986, the party took part in the first election in Bangladesh. When the BNP-led four-party coalition government was formed in 2001, some Jamaat leaders were included in the cabinet, which drew widespread criticism.
Jamaat-e-Islami was registered as a political party in 2008. After that, 25 persons including the then General Secretary of Tariqat Federation Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri filed a writ petition in 2009 challenging the validity of the party’s registration. On August 1, 2013, the High Court declared the registration of Jamaat illegal. On December 8, 2018, the Election Commission issued a notification canceling the party’s registration.
A notification will be issued any time declaring the party banned by the government’s executive order for its alleged involvement in sabotage of the quota reform movement.
