Jamaica’s ‘Reggae Girlz’ aim for historic World Cup knockout stage with match against Brazil

by time news

Jamaica’s Women’s World Cup team, known as the “Reggae Girlz,” continues to make history as they secured the country’s first ever point in the tournament and then went on to earn their first ever victory. The team’s narrow 1-0 win over Panama has boosted their confidence as they head into their final group stage match against Brazil.

In order to reach the knockout stages of a World Cup for the first time, Jamaica will need to avoid defeat against Brazil. A draw will be enough for them to progress to the round of 16. The team will also be boosted by the return of star striker Khadija Shaw, who was suspended for the win over Panama.

Brazil, currently one point behind Jamaica, knows that only a victory will suffice. However, they would also require the unlikely scenario of a Panama victory over France in order to advance with a draw.

Brazil’s legendary player Marta, considered the greatest female footballer of all time, has only been used as a second-half substitute so far in the tournament. She is playing in her final World Cup and winning a major title with Brazil is the only accomplishment missing from her illustrious career.

In the other Group F match, France can secure top spot with a victory over already eliminated Panama. Sweden is already through to the last 16 and only needs a draw against Argentina to guarantee top spot. Italy will qualify if they beat South Africa or if they draw and Argentina also draws or loses to Sweden. Argentina and South Africa both need to win in order to stand any chance of reaching the knockout stages. If both teams win, it will come down to goal difference, goals scored, and head-to-head to determine who advances.

As the Women’s World Cup continues, all eyes will be on Jamaica as they look to make history once again and reach the knockout stages of the tournament.
