The preseason opener for the Minnesota Vikings took a grim turn on Saturday, August 15, 2026, when veteran defensive utility player Jamal Adams went down to the turf with an apparent non-contact injury in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Adams, who signed with the franchise at the end of July to bolster defensive depth, was carted off the field and ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
How the Injury Unfolded at MetLife Stadium
Adams started the game making an immediate impact. Early in the first quarter, he darted through on a blitz to deliver a tackle for loss on a Giants shotgun run by running back Devin Singletary. But disaster struck early in the second quarter while he was covering a receiver on a shallow route in the red zone.

According to field-level reporting from The Athletic, Adams drifted backward from the line of scrimmage into coverage. When receiver Calvin Austin III crossed from the right side of the field to the left, Adams stumbled, fell to the turf with minimal contact, and stayed down for an extensive period. His final involvement came on a play where Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Fields with 13:32 remaining in the second quarter.
Medical personnel attended to Adams on the field before he spent a lengthy stretch inside the sideline medical tent. Though the team initially listed him as a linebacker following his July 28 contract signing, defensive coordinator Brian Flores utilized Adams across multiple levels of the defense, moving him freely between linebacker and his customary safety spot. He played 11 defensive snaps against the Giants before exiting, recording one tackle.
The injury also casts a shadow over Adams’ durability concerns. After a serious quad injury in 2022 derailed his career and limited his appearances over previous seasons, he bounced back by appearing in all 17 games for the Raiders last year—his first time playing a full slate since 2018.

You’re just crushed for him, the role he was kind of paving for himself and then just having a personality, experience, toughness that he brought in such a short amount of time. And he’s a part of this thing, but you absolutely hate to see that.”
