On Wednesday, the list of 30 candidates for the Ballon d’Or was announced. Jamal Musiala’s name was not on it.
Four German players have a chance of winning the Ballon d’Or: Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos, Antonio Rüdiger and Florian Wirtz were announced on Wednesday as part of the group of candidates. Jamal Musiala was missing – to the surprise of Max Eberl, FC Bayern’s sporting director. “I’m happy for every player who is nominated for the Ballon d’Or, but we at FC Bayern are very surprised that Jamal Musiala is missing from this list,” he told the German Press Agency.
“Jamal was one of the outstanding players at the European Championships, was voted into the top eleven and was one of the tournament’s top scorers,” argues Eberl. “In addition, FC Bayern reached the semi-finals of the Champions League thanks to Jamal’s great performances. The fact that he is not even one of the 30 best players of last season is completely incomprehensible to us.”
FC Bayern sees it this way: “In our eyes, Jamal is one of the most fascinating players in international football with absolutely extraordinary, unique skills. We are very proud of what he does for FC Bayern and also for the national team.”
Musiala is currently preparing with the national team in Herzogenaurach for the first matches of the Nations League with the matches against Hungary on Saturday (from 8.45 p.m. in the live ticker at t-online) in Düsseldorf and three days later in Amsterdam against the Netherlands.
The award for the best footballers in the world, presented by the French trade magazine “France Football”, will be presented in Paris on October 28th. Last year’s winner Lionel Messi, who triumphed with Argentina at the Copa América this year and has already won the Golden Ball eight times, was not considered, nor was the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo. For the first time since 2003, neither of the two superstars is up for election.
