Busted guitarist James Bourne revealed that his younger brother, Chris Bourne, donated a kidney to save his life after doctors told him he had a few years left to live. The brothers are recovering following the successful October transplant operation, which followed James’s sudden exit from a band tour.
The medical crisis forced James Bourne to step away from the spotlight in September 2025, just a day before an arena tour featuring Busted and fellow punk-pop band McFly was set to begin. At the time, his bandmates Charlie Simpson and Matt Willis addressed concertgoers to explain that James was really f****** sick during their opening performance in Birmingham. While the band continued the tour with Chris Bourne stepping in, James spent months out of the public eye dealing with his deteriorating health.
How Chris Bourne Stepped In as a Donor Match
As James’s condition worsened, doctors informed the 43-year-old musician that he had a few years left to live without major intervention. Facing a severe prognosis, his younger brother volunteered to undergo testing while the tour was underway.
James fell ill right before the tour started,
Chris Bourne told the press regarding the donation timeline. After his diagnosis I volunteered to be a donor, in the middle of the tour, and after a bunch of tests, it was revealed that I was a near perfect match, so it was no-brainer for me.

Chris noted that the timeline for the procedure remained fluid until late in the year. I was told that the op was going to happen at some point this year, it was all dependent on James’s wellbeing.
Suddenly, we were given a date, Chris explained according to reporting by Media Mole.
The 33-year-old sibling completed the donation process after medical staff confirmed compatibility, allowing the brothers to undergo their operations in hospital where they continue to recuperate.
Recovery and Public Updates From the Hospital
James shared the news of the successful surgery with fans through updates on his Spotify bio and social media accounts. Reflecting on the sudden interruption to his profession, he penned that one minute you’re heading out on tour, the next thing you know you’re on the bench and out of the game.

I can’t believe how much better I’m starting to feel already. I’m still going to need some time, but I wanted you to know that we’re both recovering from surgery just fine. My brother is a hero.
Before his time with Busted, James composed tracks for 5 Seconds of Summer and McFly, besides leading his very own group, Son of Dork.
James Bourne Prioritises Healing over Music and Touring
The health crisis interrupts a long history for the pop-punk outfit. Formed in Southend-on-Sea, Busted achieved chart success in the early 2000s with four number-one singles in the UK—including hits like What I Go To School For
and Year 3000
—before splitting up in 2005. The trio later reunited following side projects like McBusted alongside members of McFly.
While James Bourne has not yet announced a timeline for returning to music or touring, he emphasized that he is taking the necessary time to heal from the life-saving procedure.
