James McCaffrey, known for his role as the voice of “Max Payne” in the popular video game franchise and for his appearances in television shows like “Rescue Me,” has died at the age of 65, his agent confirmed.

McCaffrey’s talent agent, David Elliot, announced on Monday that the New York native passed away on Sunday surrounded by family and friends. His cause of death was confirmed to be cancer, specifically multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that affects bone marrow, according to reports from Variety, Fox News Digital, and The Hollywood Reporter.

His wife, Rochelle Boström, expressed her devastation at his passing, telling Fox News Digital, “His passing is devastating to so many.” Fellow actor Kevin Dillon, known for his role in the show “Entourage,” paid tribute to McCaffrey on Instagram, calling him his best friend.

McCaffrey had a successful 35-year career in television and film, appearing in popular shows like “Sex and the City,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” and “Blue Bloods.” He also voiced FBI agent Alex Casey in the “Alan Wake” video game and its sequel, as well as other characters in the video games “Control” and “Alone in the Dark.”

Despite his success in the video game world, McCaffrey admitted in a 2020 interview that he wasn’t a big fan of video games himself, saying, “I lack the proper appreciation for video games.”

In addition to his wife, McCaffrey is survived by his daughter, Tiernan McCaffrey.
