Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. has been suspended for the first eight games of the 2026 NFL season for violating the league personal-conduct policy following an offseason domestic-violence arrest in Florida. The punishment keeps him off the field until a Week 9 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid.
An Offseason Arrest Near Miami and the Charges That Followed
The suspension stems from a February arrest near Miami following a domestic dispute involving WNBA player Rickea Jackson. Law enforcement initially took the 22-year-old linebacker into custody on multiple serious counts, including two charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking, fleeing or eluding police with lights or siren, aggravated battery involving a law enforcement officer, and resisting an officer without violence to his person, according to initial reporting.
Subsequent legal filings narrowed the scope of the case. One count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon was dropped in March, leaving a total of four active charges prior to a pretrial intervention agreement. The NFL and team announcements noted a felony count structure encompassing aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, resisting an officer with violence, alongside a misdemeanor stalking count.
Pretrial Intervention and the Path to Clearing Charges
In April, the legal proceedings shifted when Pearce agreed to enter a six-month pretrial intervention program. Under the terms of the agreement, if the player satisfies all program requirements—which explicitly include staying away from Jackson—the remaining charges could be dismissed entirely.
While the judicial system weighed those pretrial conditions, the league office maintained an active review. Sources indicated that the NFL was closely monitoring
the developments throughout the spring, retaining its authority to hand down discipline independent of formal criminal convictions.
Immediate Impact on the Atlanta Falcons Defense
The eight-game ban strikes a heavy blow to an Atlanta defensive unit already grappling with severe personnel losses. The Falcons will also be without pass rusher Jalon Walker for the entire 2026 campaign after Walker tore his ACL during training camp.
The two edge defenders arrived in Atlanta via the 2025 draft carrying substantial expectations. The Falcons traded their 2026 first-rounder to the Rams in a draft-night swap to select Walker at No. 15 overall in 2025, then secured Pearce just 11 picks later at No. 26.
Pearce delivered immediately on that draft capital during his rookie campaign, racking up 10.5 sacks across 17 games and finishing as a finalist in the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.
Bond Release and Training Camp Availability
Following his arrest, Pearce subsequently missed conditioning time during organized team activities in the spring.
Despite the looming league review, the team integrated him back into practice when training camp opened. The Falcons confirmed that Pearce is eligible to participate in all preseason activities, including games, before his penalty activates for the regular season opener.
