James Van Der Beek Dies at 48 Following Colorectal Cancer Battle

The beloved actor, best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the hit series Dawson’s Creek, has passed away at the age of 48 after a courageous fight with stage 3 colorectal cancer.

James Van Der Beek died peacefully this morning, his family confirmed in a statement. “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the family wrote, adding that he “met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.” They requested privacy as they grieve, stating, “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Van Der Beek publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis in 2024. His passing marks the end of a career that captivated audiences with his portrayal of teenage angst and the complexities of growing up.

The actor rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s with starring roles in both Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues. Dawson’s Creek followed a group of high school friends navigating love, friendship, and self-discovery. Van Der Beek, just 20 years old at the time, embodied the aspiring filmmaker Dawson Leery, a character who dreamed of achieving the cinematic heights of Steven Spielberg. The show, alongside its iconic theme song by Paula Cole, “I Don’t Want To Wait,” launched the careers of Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, and Michelle Williams.

He also starred in the football drama Varsity Blues, cementing his status as a teen idol. A photograph from the premiere of Varsity Blues shows Van Der Beek alongside co-stars Ali Larter and Amy Smart.

Despite his illness, Van Der Beek made a surprise video appearance at a Dawson’s Creek reunion charity event in New York City in September, having previously withdrawn due to health concerns. This appearance underscored his dedication to his fans and his enduring connection to the show that made him a household name.

A particularly memorable moment from Dawson’s Creek – a scene from the end of the third season that became a widely circulated GIF – showcased Van Der Beek’s raw emotional talent. In the scene, Dawson witnesses his love interest beginning a relationship with his best friend, and his spontaneous tears resonated with viewers. “It wasn’t scripted that I was supposed to cry; it was just one of those things where it’s a magical moment and it just happens in the scene,” Van Der Beek explained to Vanity Fair. He later expressed some frustration with the scene’s enduring popularity, telling the Los Angeles Times, “All of a sudden, six years of work was boiled down to one seven-second clip on loop.” He playfully reclaimed the GIF in 2011 with a recreation for Funny or Die.

Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah. His legacy extends beyond his on-screen performances, encompassing a spirit of courage and grace that resonated with those who knew him and admired his work.
