James Webb finds the oldest galaxy in the universe photo

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has discovered the oldest galaxy in the universe – a system of stars that is 13.5 billion years old, formed 300 million years after the Big Bang.

The previous record holder, in terms of the oldest galaxy in the universe, discovered by the Hubble telescope in 2015, was GN-z11, which dates back 400 million years, after the birth of the universe.

JWST’s James Webb Telescope captured a look at GN-z13 using the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument, which is able to detect light from the oldest stars and galaxies.

The telescope uses a wide range of infrared light to “see” the past, and this is done by analyzing the time it takes for the light to travel through space.

While investigating the region is GN-z13, James Webb JWST also observed GN-z11, and scientists from the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Massachusetts have noted that although both are ancient, each galaxy is very young, according to a report New Scientist, where GN-z13 is about 1,600 light-years across, and GLASS z-11 spans 2,300 light-years.
