James Webb Space Telescope Captures Stunning New Images of the Ring Nebula

New images from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have provided unprecedented detail and insight into the Ring Nebula, a dying star located approximately 2,200 light-years away. The images reveal the intricate structure of the nebula, with its bright ring composed of about 20,000 individual clumps of dense molecular hydrogen gas. Each clump is roughly the size of Earth.

The Ring Nebula, also known as Messier 57, is considered one of the greatest examples of a planetary nebula. Despite its name, planetary nebulas have nothing to do with planets. They are regions of cosmic gas and dust formed from outer shells of dying stars. The Ring Nebula was once a red giant star shedding most of its mass, and its hot core now ionizes the expelled gas, resulting in the colorful emission of light.

The JWST’s latest images provide an angled view of the Ring Nebula, capturing its structure from one of its poles. The images reveal a distorted doughnut-like structure with a ton of lower density material packed within. In the center of the nebula, lies a star on its way to becoming a white dwarf, the final stage of stellar evolution.

These arcs suggest the presence of a companion star in the system, shaping the outflow of the dying star’s atmosphere.
