oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx recently unveiled the harrowing details of the medical crisis that struck him in April 2023,a situation he had kept shrouded in secrecy until now. In his revealing Netflix comedy special, “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…”,the 56-year-old star became visibly emotional as he recounted the experience, sharing how his sister was warned they could loose him and how the ordeal ultimately led him back to his faith.
While filming the upcoming comedy “Back in Action” alongside Cameron Diaz, Foxx began experiencing a debilitating headache. After receiving a cortisone shot from a doctor in Atlanta and being sent home, his sister, Deidra Dixon, sensing something was amiss, insisted on taking him to the hospital.
Foxx expressed his dissatisfaction with the initial medical care, quipping, “What the heck was that? I don’t know if you can leave reviews for doctors, but that’s a half star.”
However, he showered praise upon the staff at the hospital where his sister took him, situated just a stone’s throw from the theater where he was recording his special.
“My sister had a feeling angels were in there,” Foxx shared. “You all saved my life, just 400 yards from here, at Piedmont hospital. You put me back together again.”
By that point, Foxx had collapsed. His sister received the devastating news that he was suffering from a brain bleed that had resulted in a stroke.Doctors informed her that immediate surgery was crucial, or he wouldn’t survive.
Recalling the moment, Foxx shared, “If I don’t operate right now, we’re going to lose him,” his sister was told. Foxx said she knelt outside the operating room and prayed incessantly.
Describing his unconscious state, Foxx stated, “Your life doesn’t flash before your eyes. It was oddly peaceful. I saw the tunnel, but I didn’t see the light.I was definitely in that tunnel, though. It was hot in that tunnel.”
He added with a touch of humor,”Damn,am I headed to the wrong place? As when I looked down the tunnel,I thought I saw the devil saying,’Come on.’ Or was that Puffy [Sean Combs]? I don’t know.”
Until the release of his special, Foxx had remained tight-lipped about his condition, leading to widespread speculation in the media and among his devoted fans. Some of their theories even inspired jokes within the show.
Foxx explained that he awoke in May, confined to a wheelchair, with no recollection of what had transpired. Doctors informed him there was a possibility of a full recovery, but warned him it would likely be the “worst year of his life”.As he adapted to his new reality, Foxx recounted how he jokingly attempted to maintain his privacy, especially around his female nurses. He later discovered that she had actually been bathing him for a month and a half.
He expressed his gratitude to the numerous physiotherapists and a psychiatrist who guided him, leading him to the realization that reconnecting with his Christian faith was key to his recovery. Maintaining his sense of humor was equally important, he believed. “If I can stay funny, I can stay alive” became his guiding principle.
“Back in Action” premieres on January 17th, and “What Had Happened Was…” is now available on Netflix.
