Jangheung-gun successfully completed the ‘Jangheung Water Festival’ on the 4th. The 17th Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival concluded its 9-day run on August 4th.

During the festival period, approximately 690,000 visitors were recorded to have visited Jangheung-gun. This year’s water festival, held under the slogan ‘ALL Water is Good – Exciting Jangheung Water Festival’, declared a leap forward as a younger festival and a global festival.

The water of Jangheung contains joy and healing, so they also worked hard to establish the identity of the water festival that says that if you get splashed with this water, you will be healthy and live long. This year, they signed a business agreement with the Thailand Songkran Festival and were evaluated to have taken a step closer to the ranks of world-class festivals. In particular, the performance of the Thailand Songkran Festival art team on the opening ceremony stage left a deep impression on tourists and local residents. The Global Water World and Jangheung Rock Festival, which showed the younger appearance of the water festival, also ended with favorable reviews.

On the opening day, July 27th, the Salsu Battle Street Parade was held with over 15,000 people pouring into the streets, displaying an unprecedented scale. This year’s Salsu Battle Parade was held under the theme of ‘Beat Global Warming! Healing Water, Health Water, Longevity Water Jangheung’. It featured a performance of the adventures of the water festival characters Onbi and Onbi Rangers fighting against the Goddess of Fire who is destroying the Earth’s environment, drawing active participation from tourists and local residents. Various programs that took place in the water, such as the world’s largest water fight, Catch the Giant Eel, a ball pit battle, water bicycles, wooden boats, and Disco Pang Pang, continued to be popular.

Although it is full of exciting programs and performances, it also shines as a ‘frugal festival’ where you can enjoy it at a low price. There is no admission fee for the water festival, and all high-quality performances are free, and the experience fees are also cheap, from 2,000 won to 7,000 won. Since 2,000 won is returned as a local gift certificate for experiences that cost more than 5,000 won, you can enjoy all the programs for less than 5,000 won.

In order to eradicate baggage fees, the prices of food and weight were disclosed in advance on the website to manage the prices at the festival site. The festival also received positive reviews for creating large shade tents, outdoor tables, and free showers throughout the festival site, which tourists could use freely.

Jangheung-gun has been using reusable containers at food booths in the festival venue since this year to protect the environment. As part of the ‘Creating a Festival Without Disposable Products’ campaign, they have also continued their efforts to protect the environment by holding a transparent PET bottle exchange event in the festival venue.

The Water Festival is known as a good festival that shares most of its profits with neighbors. This year, 30 million won was donated to UNICEF, and 10 million won each was given to the Network Social Welfare Corporation, Jangheung-gun Sharing Welfare Foundation, and Jeonnam Community Chest of Korea, reflecting on the meaning of life and sharing that water holds.

Kim Seong, the governor of Jangheung County, said, “This year’s water festival has taken its first step beyond being the representative summer festival in Korea and has become a global festival,” and added, “I would like to thank the many volunteers and local residents who worked hard along with the tourists who visited the water festival.”
