Jangseong Hwangryong Traditional Market is entering its second heyday. Discussions on the development plan for Jangseong-gun Hwangryong Traditional Market have begun in earnest.

On the 25th, the county held a ‘Hwangryong Traditional Market Activation Research Service Launch Report Meeting’ in the county office situation room with the attendance of Jangseong County Governor Kim Han-jong, Jangseong County Council Chairman Sim Min-seop and council members, merchants’ association, and public officials in charge.

Hwangryong Traditional Market, which opened in 1964, is a five-day market that is considered one of the best in the Honam region, not just in Jangseong. Jangseong-gun commissioned a research service to the Daebon Food Industry Development Institute to establish a comprehensive plan for each sector that can systematically improve the facilities and operations of Hwangryong Traditional Market. The service period is approximately six months, until the end of this year.

The Daebon Foodservice Industry Development Institute is a research institute under Thebon Korea, a well-known broadcaster and restaurant entrepreneur, led by CEO Baek Jong-won. Jangseong-gun signed a business agreement with Thebon Korea in September of last year and has been cooperating steadily for the development of regional specialty foods and human resource development. The Daebon Foodservice Industry Development Institute Jangseong Center is scheduled to open in March of next year.

At the service commencement report meeting held that day, the Daebon Food Industry Development Institute diagnosed the areas that Hwangryong Traditional Market needed to improve and presented improvement measures. Concept development that reflects regional characteristics and facility utilization guidelines were discussed extensively.

In particular, the merchants’ association and Jangseong County Council continued to ask questions about the use of existing wooden jangoks. In response to the opinion that the cost of repairing and using old wooden jangoks and the cost of modernizing new facilities are not that different, the Daebon Food Industry Development Institute responded, “The jangoks along the narrow alleys are an attractive content unique to Hwangryong Market,” and “If linked with nearby tourist resources such as Hwangryong River, it will have considerable competitiveness.”

Jangseong County Governor Kim Han-jong said, “I hope this research project will be the first step toward opening a ‘second heyday’ for Hwangryong Traditional Market,” and added, “I will actively communicate and collaborate with the merchants’ association, county council, and Daebon Foodservice Industry Development Institute to come up with the best plan for market development.”
