Jangseong-gun held a groundbreaking ceremony for the National Subtropical Crop Research Center in Samgye-myeon. Jangseong-gun took its first step toward becoming a center for research and cultivation of subtropical crops. On the morning of the 4th, the groundbreaking ceremony for the National Subtropical Crop Research Center of the Rural Development Administration was held in Sangdo-ri, Samgye-myeon, Jangseong-gun. Approximately 200 people attended, including Director Kim Myeong-su of the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Jangseong-gun Mayor Kim Han-jong, Jangseong-gun Council Chairman Sim Min-seop, provincial and county council members, public officials, and agricultural group members.

The National Subtropical Crops Research Center is a research institute under the Rural Development Administration that prepares for the future of agriculture in response to climate change. It promotes research, demonstration, and industrialization of subtropical crop cultivation.

The construction of the center is a national project with a total cost of 37 billion won invested by the government, with a land area of 227,783㎡ and a total floor area of 4,358㎡. A comprehensive research building, management office, and security office will be built on the site, and the project period is 7 years from 2020 to 2026.

Jangseong County has been actively cooperating with the Rural Development Administration and South Jeolla Province to ensure that the administrative procedures required for establishing the center, such as small-scale environmental impact assessments, disaster impact assessments, and detailed designs, proceed without a hitch.

The significance of the establishment of the Jangseong National Subtropical Crop Research Center can be largely summarized in two points. The most notable aspect is the response to subtropical crop cultivation in inland areas such as the metropolitan area. While other subtropical crop research facilities are built in coastal areas, Jangseong County is located in the northernmost inland area of Jeollanam-do. It is expected to play a pivotal role in the expansion of subtropical crop cultivation nationwide due to global warming.

It is also noteworthy that it is the gateway to Jeonnam and a transportation hub through which the Honam Expressway and KTX pass. Since research results can be easily shared, the efficiency and speed of climate change response in the agricultural sector can be greatly improved. It is expected to be established as an outpost for research on subtropical crop cultivation.

Kim Han-jong, the governor of Jangseong County, said, “I expect that the National Subtropical Crop Research Center will play a key role in providing a new impetus for the development of Jangseong, creating new income opportunities, and further leading the nation’s future agriculture.”

Meanwhile, Jangseong-gun is also spurring the cultivation of subtropical fruits. Lemons, which are being cultivated as a new income subtropical crop starting in 2022, are being cultivated by 12 farms on a total of 3.8 hectares (ha), and are awaiting their first shipment this fall. Apple mangoes, which began production last August, are also gaining attention in the consumer market as a premium subtropical fruit with high added value.
