Janine Lochrenberg, a 65-year-old retired nuclear radiographer and open-water swimmer, died on Tuesday morning, October 20, following a shark attack at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, South Africa. Municipal authorities closed nearby beaches until further notice as investigators opened an inquest into the tragedy.
The morning swim at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, previously known as East London, turned fatal shortly after 7 a.m. on Tuesday.
Police officers summoned to the coastline discovered the body of Lochrenberg with open wounds. The Eastern Cape police confirmed that an inquest had been opened. It was opened at the KuGompo police station to examine the circumstances of the incident, while state pathology services transferred her body for examination.

Rescue On The Shore Fails
Lochrenberg was swimming with a regular group of open-water enthusiasts when she signaled that she was in trouble. Fellow swimmer Mike Loewe recounted that members of the group noticed a splash and a fin before swimming out to reach her. Two swimmers made contact first, followed by Loewe and others who converged to pull her toward the shore.
Mark Roach, described as an Olympic swimmer, assisted in bringing her out of the surf. A trained paramedic who was part of the swimming group immediately performed CPR on the sand, but Lochrenberg could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene.
We all realized she’d been bitten by a shark, and she was in a very bad way.

Witnesses reported that the victim sustained severe injuries to her right arm and upper leg. Loewe noted that close physical contact during the rescue gave him the immediate impression that she had passed away while being brought in from the water.
Beaches Closed After Attack
In response to the fatal encounter, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality acted quickly to shut down public access along the waterfront. Spokesperson Luzuko Buku announced that both Orient Beach and Eastern Beach had been closed to the public until further notice as an urgent precautionary measure.
According to municipal records, this incident marks the first fatal shark attack recorded in KuGompo City since 1997. The city’s last non-fatal shark attack was reported in 2023. While South Africa’s extensive coastline has a documented history of deadly encounters—including two fatal attacks in 2022 and one fatal unprovoked bite last year—fatalities remain uncommon overall.
Friends Remember Fallen Swimmer
Friends, family, and fellow athletes flooded local media with remembrances for Lochrenberg, highlighting her quiet dedication to both the ocean and her art. Beyond her professional background as a nuclear radiographer, she was a treasured viola player who had performed with the Viva Musica Ensemble since its inception.
She was never one to seek the spotlight, preferring to quietly go about doing what she loved most — swimming in the ocean. But behind her gentle, unassuming nature was someone who contributed so much to our swimming community, always there, always willing, and very much a part of the heart of our group.

Members of her swimming group emphasized that the ocean remained central to her life.
Although the attack left the close-knit collective devastated, surviving swimmers indicated an intention to eventually return to the water. They emphasized that they viewed the predator as a wild animal fulfilling its natural role in the marine ecosystem rather than an object of blame.

City Warns Public To Stay Out
Municipal officials have urged residents and visitors to stay entirely out of the water at affected beaches and to comply strictly with warning signs and lifeguard instructions. Authorities plan to increase lifeguard deployments and extend monitoring hours along Buffalo City beaches ahead of the upcoming festive season.
As police investigations continue, authorities and marine experts have not officially confirmed the exact shark species involved in the attack, though Loewe noted that local scientists believe the encounter involved a great white shark.
