The 23-year-old tennis star Jannik Sinner tested positive for doping but was also exonerated by the authorities of the ITIA (Anti-Doping Agency of Tennis) of any wrongdoing due to unintentional ingestion. He will “only” lose the 400 points and the prize money of around 300,000 euros that he earned at Indian Wells. His participation in the US Open is in no way in jeopardy. Today (August 20), the Sexten native released a statement on Instagram:
Jannik Sinner was cleared of any misconduct by an independent court. A positive doping test in April for a trace element of the substance Clostebol (less than one billionth of a gram) was found to be an unintended contamination after a thorough investigation. This occurred due to the treatment of a cut on his physiotherapist’s finger, who unknowingly used a product containing Clostebol. The physiotherapist then treated Sinner without gloves, leading to the contamination. Sinner fully cooperated with the investigation from the beginning. Despite his innocence, he accepts the point penalty from the tournament in Indian Wells, where the test took place. Sinner emphasizes the importance of strict anti-doping regulations and looks positively towards the future after this challenging phase.
