Sales in the food market grew by 9% in January compared to the same month last year and amounted to NIS 3.54 billion – according to data from Storenext that reached Calcalist.

It can be estimated that the reduction of spending time in restaurants due to the war atmosphere, the decrease in trips abroad as well as the cold weather that leads to an increase in the consumption of stews, soups, etc., led to an increase in consumption.

Sales of the entire consumer goods market, which also includes beverages, toiletries and cleaning products, grew by 7.3% in January, and the increase in consumer spending of NIS 329 million led to them totaling NIS 4.49 billion.

There were two big price increases in the food market last year – in January and May. The jump in sales last month was registered before the new price increases that came into effect this week – partly from Strauss (up to 25%) and Stavitch (up to 20%). Along with the two big companies, the prices of Sogat’s legumes, rice and sugar also increased by up to 20%, the prices of Yakin’s and Beit Al-Hasita’s canned goods, and more.

These are waves of price increases that are added to those registered in 2022 and 2023 and led to an increase in the Stornext price index by about 5% in each of the years.
