Japan financed Drinking Water Supply Project in Las Animas Canton, in the municipality of Santiago Nonualco

On October 18, 2023, His Excellency the Ambassador of Japan in El Salvador, Mr. ARIYOSHI Katsuhide, the distinguished municipal mayor of Santiago Nonualco, Damaris de Escalante and Mr. Mario Vásquez, President of the Cantón Las Animas Community Development Association, together with members of the community, participated in the inauguration of the Drinking Water Supply Project in Cantón Las Animas, municipality of Santiago Nonualco, in the department of La Paz.

With the newly built system, drinking water reaches homes directly and safely.

of 609 people.

Since the founding of the community they had never had drinking water in their homes. With
With great effort, the community collected funds to drill a well to supply
water to the families of the canton, although due to the lack of transportation and resources, the families who are
furthest from the well were always supplied from the nearest rivers or springs to wash
clothing or bathing and even for drinking. In winter some families reuse water
rains which were collected from the gutters on the roofs of the homes and stored
in common deposits.

Mayor awards recognition to His Excellency Ambassador

Having identified and analyzed the conditions and great need to have safe drinking water in homes, and thus improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Canton, the Embassy of Japan, through the Non-Refundable Financial Assistance Program for Community Projects Human Security (APCS), decided to contribute an amount of USD $155,700.00 for the execution of the project, which consisted of the construction of a storage tank and pumping house, supply and installation of a perimeter fence, and exterior works on the water tank.

There was also the support of the Municipal Mayor’s Office, who prepared the Technical Folder for the project, and also supplied the project sign and plaque, for an amount of USD $3,500.00. The community provided the valuable unskilled labor to carry out the works, also financing the supply and installation of the
home connections and their respective meters, with a contribution valued at USD $57,730.00. In total, the project is an investment of USD $216,930.00

Through the APCS scheme, the People and Government of Japan have been supporting more than 440 community and municipal initiatives for more than 30 years, and providing support to more than 1.6 million Salvadorans; support that translates into approximately $40 million dollars in donations for project development.
