In conjunction with the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, the army and settlers continue their arrests and raids in the West Bank, which have led to the killing of more than 576 Palestinians, the injury of more than 5,350, and the arrest of 9,700.
In this context, the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation reported that “Tokyo is making arrangements to impose its first sanctions to freeze the assets of Israeli settlers due to violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.”
The agency quoted Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi as saying: “We will impose sanctions on four Israeli settlers in the West Bank, including freezing their assets, for their involvement in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, in occupied Palestine.”
“The violence carried out by some Israeli settlers in the West Bank has increased significantly since October 2023,” Hayashi added.
Hayashi continued that his country “will regularly implement these asset freeze measures, and will continue to strongly urge the Israeli government to completely freeze settlement activities, in cooperation with the international community, including the G7.”
In February, Britain imposed sanctions on four Israelis, saying they were “extremist settlers who carried out violent attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank.” Under the measures, Britain imposed strict restrictions on the money and travel of the four individuals, who it said were involved in “outrageous human rights violations.” The British Foreign Office stated that “settlers in the West Bank have engaged in unprecedented levels of violence over the past year.”
Canada also announced in June that it would impose sanctions on Israeli “extremist settlers” for their involvement in “acts of violence” against Palestinians in the West Bank.
The number of Palestinian deaths due to the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, has risen, resulting in the killing of more than 39,006 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children, and the injury of 89,818 others.
