According to the 2020 National Census, there were about 91 lakh single women aged 15 to 49 years in 46 out of 47 provinces of Japan, excluding Tokyo. This is about 20 percent less than the 1.11 crore single men of the same age group. In some areas, this difference has reached 30 percent.

In recent years, more women than men have moved to the Greater Tokyo area. These women do not return to rural areas after going for education or work. Due to this, the gender ratio in the rural areas of the country is deteriorating. According to the Japan Times report, the new initiative will increase the existing subsidy. Under this, the government will provide up to $ 7000 to women moving to rural areas.
Japan’s biggest challenge
Japan is currently facing the biggest challenge of declining population. Its birth rate has reached the lowest level ever. Last year only 727,277 births were recorded and the fertility rate was 1.20. The birth rate required to keep the population of a country or region stable is 2.1, that is, every woman should give birth to an average of 2.1 children.
