TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s government will allocate about 2 trillion ($13 billion) to support efforts to expand its microprocessor sector, marking the Asian nation’s latest move to regain its manufacturing glory.
The country is a leading supplier of tools and materials for chip production, but has lost its manufacturing edge in recent decades and is now providing subsidies to chipmakers to increase their capacity.
Part of the funds will be allocated through a supplementary budget for this fiscal year and will be used to support Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC and manufacturer Rapidus, which aims to produce high-end chips in Hokkaido.
