Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez announced that Manila and Tokyo are in the process of discussing the deployment of Japanese military forces in the Philippines. In an interview with the Financial Times, the diplomat clarified that the parties are at the finish line to sign an agreement that will allow them to participate in joint military exercises, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.

Romualdez noted that the countries have considered the possibility of stationing troops on a rotational basis, similar to the agreement under which the United States maintains its military forces in the Philippines. The ambassador stressed that the governments of Manila and Tokyo are moving closer to concluding a “mutual access agreement” that will also allow for joint exercises and training of military personnel on each other’s territory.

“This is something that we have already discussed earlier, and we will continue to consider this issue as part of our interaction,” the ambassador noted in a conversation with the publication.

The diplomat also noted that the United States and the Philippines are “very close” to concluding an agreement on the exchange of military intelligence information.
