A Japanese elementary school student in China was injured after being attacked by a man with a weapon while walking to school.
On the 18th, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshi Moriya, the Japanese government’s deputy spokesperson, announced at a regular press conference that a child attending a Japanese school in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, was attacked and injured by an adult male that morning.
According to Nihon Keizai Shimbun and other sources, the victim was an elementary school boy who was attacked on his way to school in the morning. The child was reportedly stabbed with a weapon, and the extent of his injuries is unclear. He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The suspect has been identified and is being questioned by investigative authorities.
“To protect our citizens, we have asked the Chinese authorities to prevent a recurrence and share detailed information,” said Deputy Minister Moriya.
The Japanese Consulate General in Guangzhou has dispatched staff to the area to assess the situation and provide necessary support.
The motive for the crime is still unknown. Coincidentally, this day is the 93rd anniversary of the Manchurian Incident (September 18 Incident), when Japan began its war of aggression against Manchuria in 1931.
From that morning, China’s state-run broadcaster CCTV was broadcasting a special program on the Manchurian Incident and the Japanese invasion. Sirens were sounded in 14 cities in Liaoning Province and other parts of China that morning, and cars on the streets honked their horns as well.
Shenzhen is one of China’s leading cities in science and technology industry, and many Japanese companies have advanced into the area.
Last June, in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, a Chinese man stabbed a student and his mother with a knife while they were waiting for a school bus.
