Singer Kwon Eunbi talked about the efforts she made to debut in a Japanese film.
On the 18th, at Megabox COEX in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, an interview was held with Ryohei Otani, Eunbi Kwon, and Ryo Narita, the leads of the Japanese movie ‘I Just Dropped My Smartphone: Final Hacking Game’ (directed by Hideo Nakata / hereinafter referred to as ‘Smartphone’).
‘Smartphone’ is based on a novel by Japanese author Akira Shiga, and attracted 1.5 million viewers when it was first released in 2018, and the sequel, ‘I Just Dropped My Smartphone: Caught a Murderer’, which was released in 2020, recorded 900,000 viewers. did it
This final series tells the story of Urano, a genius hacker and murderer who succeeded in escaping prison in the previous film, who comes to Korea upon receiving a request from the anti-government group ‘Rose of Sharon‘, which is trying to prevent the Korea-Japan summit. Ryō Narita played the role of Urano, who attempts cyber terrorism following parts 1 and 2, and Eunbi Kwon played the role of Sumin, a member of the Rose of Sharon who monitors Urano. Ryohei Ohtani played Kim Kang-hoon, the head of the operations headquarters of Rose of Sharon, a Korean anti-government organization.
In an interview that day, Kwon Eun-bi said about her chemistry with her co-star Ryo Narita, “I am so thankful that the actor I matched with when I first acted was Ryo Narita,” and “I was very immersed in it.” He continued by saying, “When playing the other person’s role or lines, they kept paying attention to the other person’s lines as well as their own, so even though it was my first time, I think I was able to focus a little more.”
“There were a lot of parts that were lacking,” he said. “There were a lot of parts that were difficult, such as pronunciation or emotions, but he corrected each and every thing during rehearsal, and if there was a part that was a little lacking in pronunciation, he continued to practice it in detail and repeatedly. Thanks to that, I was able to do it well. “I think it was an honor to be able to work together for the first time.”
But it was difficult to approach Ryo Narita at first. Eunbi Kwon said, “To be honest, my first impression was a bit scary,” and “From the looks of it, he doesn’t seem to have a smiling or lively personality,” making people laugh. He continued, “I was worried about whether I could approach him or become close to him, but in order to lighten the mood while filming, I asked him about his MBTI and took a test together,” adding, “But his MBTI came out as ENFP, just like me, so I thought, ‘This is really unexpected. “I did it all,” he said, explaining his surprise at the time. He added, “This person may have looked that way because his role was like this, or maybe it was because I thought that way, but I think I was surprised to see that he was very similar to me on the outside.”
Regarding the Japanese language study process, “I asked the company not to schedule anything for about 3 months, and during those 3 months, I only continued to study the Japanese script.” He added, “There were three teachers in total. “I think I continued to take lessons for three months from these three teachers, including a teacher who could help me and a teacher who was able to organize my emotions well,” he confessed. He added with laughter by saying, “It’s my first time acting and there are a lot of lines in the script, so this is the first time I’ve spent such a long time in solitude since my debut.”
Regarding the difficulties in the process of creating Sumin’s character, he said, “Because it was a spy role, there was action,” and “I also played the role of a subordinate of my boss, but it was all unfamiliar. It was very difficult because there were many situations that I had never experienced before.” He continued, “I think that’s why I looked for a lot of references and previous works,” and added, “Since I have no experience with scenes of abuse, I did a lot of research on how I could express them better.”
Kwon Eun-bi also said that there was a large gap between her real self and her character. He said, “My personality is very bright and full of energy, but the character of Sumin is not like that, so it was a bit difficult to express it.” He added, “Because the character is so unique, of course I couldn’t sympathize with it at all from an ordinary person’s perspective, but Sumin was also hurt. “He was a human being, and Urano had suffered a lot, but there was a point where we could form a consensus that it was all abuse,” he explained.
In addition, Kwon Eun-bi said, “So I think a connection was created because of that,” but added, “I did not sympathize with Urano’s actions themselves. When this problem arose, I solved it in this direction, but Urano responded in a different way than the direction I thought.” “It was a role that tormented people a bit, and I think it occurred to me that even if it was the same abuse, abuse and obsession could be resolved in such different ways,” he added.
Next, Eunbi Kwon also talked about her real personality. He said, “Even though he is having a hard time, he seems to pretend a lot to be bright and wants to appear strong,” and “When I was a leader, I only showed a strong side to lead my friends as much as possible, and I don’t think I showed a lot of signs of being tired or weak.” He continued, “I’ve heard a lot that he looks a bit cold when I look at the image, but it’s actually the opposite.” He added, “If you tell me, he’s not like that at all. Even when filming, he wants to liven up the mood and make it fun, and he wants everyone to be happy.” “People,” he said.
Meanwhile, ‘Smartphone’, starring Kwon Eun-bi, will be released in Korea next year.
