Tokyo protested to Moscow in connection with the trip of Deputy Prime Ministers Marat Khusnullin and Dmitry Grigorenko to the Iturup Island of the Kuril ridge. This was stated by Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, according to the Kyodo agency.

“This is incompatible with Japan’s consistent position on the northern territories and unacceptable,” the minister said.

The trip of Khusnullin and Grigorenko was announced on October 13 by the government of the Sakhalin Region on VKontakte. In particular, the deputy prime ministers will visit the Yasny fish processing complex on Iturup and meet with businessmen to discuss investment projects in the Kuril ridge.

New Japanese Prime Minister announced Tokyo’s sovereignty over the South Kuriles

The Kuril Islands were seized by the USSR as a result of World War II in 1945. However, in Tokyo, Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the group of uninhabited islands of Haboimai are considered their regions, which are called “northern territories” in the country. The Kremlin has repeatedly stressed that the islands belong to Russia and refused to transfer them to Japan.
