Taking care of your skin doesn’t stop at your hairline. I could already see that in the videos with the hashtag #japaneseheadspa. Not only does this treatment look super relaxing, it is also said to have a number of health benefits. What Happens During a Japanese Head Spa? And what is such a treatment good for? Digital Editor Vera checked it out for you.

How does a Japanese Head Spa treatment work?

Preparation

Lorèn from the Japanese Head Spa explains that the treatment starts with a thorough scalp scan, during which my hair and scalp are extensively analyzed with a microscope. At this salon they use four categories of common hair and scalp problems: an oily scalp, redness, dandruff and hair loss. I seem to have an oily scalp more easily with some sebum accumulation in the hair follicles. Based on this analysis, they apply special products and techniques to tackle this.

Therapy

You then lie down in a comfortable chair and wear an eye mask. First you get a dry scalp massage. Then your hair is wet and you receive a detox shampoo, which deeply cleanses the scalp. This shampoo contains eucalyptus, which gives it a cooling feel. In between, a waterfall tap is placed on your head, in other words: all small streams. A scrub made from Amazon clay is then applied to scrub away all impurities. As a final step, your hair is cared for with shampoo tailored to your skin type. The treatment ends with a wonderful neck and shoulder massage.

After treatment

After the treatment, a microscope is examined again. My scalp was extremely clean and shiny, unlike before the treatment. Your hair will be nicely blow-dried, so you can leave the salon feeling completely zen. The night after the treatment I slept very well and deeply, and I noticed that I still had a super clean and shiny scalp for a few days. My hair also felt very smooth and airy and had a very nice shine.

What are the benefits of a Japanese Headspa?

Research has shown that the treatment stimulates blood circulation, which can promote hair growth and support a healthy scalp. This is because the treatment consists of different massage techniques. In addition, research on the effect of a scalp massage on stress hormones, blood pressure and heart rate of healthy women (2016) shows that the massage and blood circulation reduce headaches and stress. It also appears that the massage with the use of different scents, such as a treatment of orange and cloves or a detox shampoo of thyme and eucalyptus, will make you feel more relaxed.

Lorèn explains that you can in principle do the massage as often as you would like, but when it comes to the intensive detox treatment with scrub, she recommends scheduling a treatment once every six to eight weeks. After a few treatments, she says you will notice a real difference. The Japanese Hair and Scalp Treatment costs 75 euros and takes approximately 60 minutes.
