TOKYO, (Xinhua) — Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) has formally given the green light to facilities for dumping radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea, local media reported.

The NRA issued the certificate to the plant’s operator, the Tokyo Power Company (Tepco), showing that the facility has passed final checks, according to the Kyodo news agency.

The approval comes after Japan’s nuclear regulator inspected the system, which includes pumps to suck up large amounts of seawater and emergency shut-off valves, it added.

The move also means logistical preparations have been completed, putting the country on track to start releasing radioactive waters into the sea around this summer.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released its latest safety review report on Japan’s ocean dumping plan on Tuesday, saying it “complies with agreed international standards.”

However, protesters inside and outside the country expressed their disapproval, saying that the Japanese government was simply “unreasonable” in taking the IAEA report as “a permit for ocean dumping”, in complete disregard of the opposition of the local residents, the fishing industry and neighboring countries.
