Tokyo, Feb. 01–

Japan has set a new record by implementing a system to generate 1000 kilowatts of electricity from a tsunami.

Tsunamis are extremely dangerous. 1,000 km from its origin. Capable of wreaking havoc even in areas up to Tsunami of this magnitude occur twice a decade. Low-risk tsunamis occur twice a year. 20 percent of the world’s tsunamis occur near Japan.

Thus, the Japanese are following various scientific methods to protect their country. In Japan’s important ports, retaining walls have been built to reduce the impact of tsunamis.

Walls in harbors

These walls, which rise up to block the waves when a tsunami occurs, must come down immediately after the tsunami subsides. Need electricity to download. However, the power supply will be cut off in the tsunami affected area. To deal with such situation, Tokyo Institute of Technology has adopted a strategy called Self-powered movable seawall system-SMS. Accordingly, a small one-foot-high wall was installed next to the usual tsunami containment walls.

‘Turbines’ were attached to this. When the tsunami waves hit it, the blades of ‘turbines’ rotate and generate electricity. The electricity thus generated is used to power the retaining walls. On an average these ‘turbines’ are said to generate 1,000 kilowatts of electricity.
