Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on the 22nd regarding U.S. President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not run for reelection, “I recognize that (President Biden) made the best political judgment as president.”

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) and Mainichi Shimbun, Prime Minister Kishida told reporters at the Prime Minister’s Office this morning, “I will refrain from commenting directly because it is a matter of domestic politics in the United States.”

He then emphasized, “The Japan-U.S. alliance is the axis of Japan’s diplomacy and security,” and “I will keep a close eye on their future movements.”

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi praised President Biden at a regular press conference this morning, saying, “Since taking office in 2021, he has energetically addressed various issues both at home and abroad, leading to further strengthening of Japan-U.S. relations.”

Regarding the departure of President Biden, who has valued alliances, he emphasized, “It is an important matter of interest to our country what policies the U.S. government, our ally, will take.”

He also said, “We will continue to maintain close communication between Japan and the U.S., and at the same time, we will closely monitor the situation in the U.S.”

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi emphasized, “What is important is to carry out necessary policy coordination with the U.S. government in response to various situations that may arise in the future, regardless of the presidential election results.” He added, “We will continue to communicate closely with the U.S. government.”
Earlier, on the 21st (local time), President Biden announced that he would give up his re-election bid.

He stated through social media X (X, formerly Twitter), “I was thinking of running for re-election, but I believe it is in the best interest of the country and the party for me to step down from the candidacy and focus fully on serving my remaining term as president.”

The detailed reason for giving up the re-election bid was not mentioned in this statement. It is expected that he will directly reveal the details related to giving up the re-election bid in a speech later this week.

The U.S. Democratic Party is facing an unprecedented situation where its presidential candidate has withdrawn just three and a half months before the November election. President Biden has withdrawn from the presidential race and declared that he will support his running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris. The Democratic Party’s national convention, where they will officially decide on their presidential candidate, will be held from the 19th to the 22nd of next month.
