Prince Hisahito of the Japanese Imperial Family has become the first male to reach adulthood in nearly 40 years, a move that could significantly ease the crisis over the survival of the royal family that has lasted for more than 1,000 years.

Prince Hisahito is the nephew of Emperor Naruhito and his father, Crown Prince Akishino, was the last male royal to reach adulthood in 1985.

Hisahito is the youngest of 17 royal family members, of which only four are male.

Hisahito’s low rank in the line of succession has been a major issue due to the refusal to recognize female emperors, and the Japanese government has been discussing ways to allow female emperors to succeed.

The 1947 Royal Family Law reflects a generally conservative concept of the family, with only male members of the royal family inheriting the throne and royal females who marry commoners being stripped of their royal status.

The general public in Japan supports Hisahito’s cousin Aiko, the only daughter of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, who graduated from Harvard and served as a diplomat. Empress Masako cannot inherit the throne by law.

In the order of succession to the throne, Crown Prince Fumihito, Emperor Naruhito’s younger brother and Hisahito’s father, is first in line, with Hisahito second.

Until Hisahito was born in 2006, there was a strong possibility that Princess Aiko would succeed to the throne.

Prince Hisahito said in a statement that day, “For now, I would like to enjoy the rest of my high school life.” He is known to be very interested in insects and has even co-authored a research paper on dragonflies in the gardens of Akasaka Palace.
