14 leaders of Roshan Ershad-led Jatiya Party and former Member of Parliament (MP) have demanded an end to mass arrests in connection with the violence and casualties surrounding the quota reform movement.

In a joint statement on Thursday (August 1), they said, innocent people are being detained and harassed through block raids and combing operations. Ordinary people are victims of the illegal trade. Therefore, mass arrests without evidence and specific accused must be stopped. All educational institutions should be opened. The exact list of those who were martyred in the quota reform movement should be published. Those involved in the killings must be brought to justice through a fair investigation.

Those who gave a statement are – former opposition party leader Begum Roshan Ershad, former minister Kazi Feroz Rashid, Syed Abu Hossain Babla, former state minister Golam Sarwar Milan, Rahgir Al Mahi Saad Ershad, Dr. Rustam Ali Faraji, Ziaul Haque Mridha, Nurul Islam Milan, Yahia Chowdhury, Abdul Gaffar Biswas, Abul Kashem Sarkar, MA Gofran, Engineer Mamunur Rashid and Moktar Hossain.

The former MPs said in a statement that the students were treated inhumanely to suppress their non-political rational peaceful movement. Students were brutally tortured and fired indiscriminately. We strongly condemn these repressions and killings.

They said that even though it was possible to resolve the issue through discussion, why this movement was pushed to violence after prolongation, who is responsible for it should be investigated and made clear before the nation.

Former members of parliament said that in the name of suppressing the movement, block raids, mass arrests and arrests should be stopped by conducting combing operations. Arrested students should be released unconditionally immediately. The families of those killed in this movement should be given adequate compensation and the injured should be given proper medical treatment. Closed educational institutions should be opened immediately and education environment should be restored in the country.
