Jason Bourne Returns: A Look Ahead to Bourne 6 Amidst Mixed Reviews of the Franchise’s Latest Installment

by time news

Five movies, nearly 1.5 billion dollars at the global box office, and an Oscar-winning actor transformed into an action star. This is the “Bourne” series, with the sixth film currently in the works. Meanwhile, Part 5 will be airing on TV today.

When it was announced shortly after the turn of the millennium that none other than Matt Damon would take on the lead role in Doug Liman’s adaptation of the bestseller “The Bourne Identity” (2002), skepticism spread among many. Although the actor had long proven himself in Hollywood, having won his first (and to date only) Oscar at the age of twenty-nine (for the screenplay of “Good Will Hunting”), he had primarily established himself with dramas like “Good Will Hunting” (1997) and “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999). Stepping into the role of Jason Bourne was quite a different challenge.

However, Matt Damon proved his critics wrong—and laid the groundwork for one of the most popular action movie franchises since the turn of the millennium, which to date includes five films with a worldwide box office gross of nearly 1.5 billion dollars. Today, September 28, 2024, at 8:15 PM on VOX, the latest installment of the spy saga, “Jason Bourne,” is airing on TV. It’s definitely worth watching, not least to refresh the memory of where the story currently stands…

… because this story is indeed set to continue! We have gathered all the previous information about “Bourne 6” in this article:

One of cinema’s greatest action heroes is returning: “Bourne 6” is in the works – but will Matt Damon be involved?

For today’s TV broadcast, we can only offer a conditional recommendation. The reason is obvious. The FSK has rated the rough and gritty agent action film for ages 16 and up. Therefore, during prime time at 8:15 PM, the film can only be shown in a trimmed version suitable for viewers 12 and older. We recommend rather watching it on Netflix, where the film – like its direct predecessor “The Bourne Legacy” – is available uncut. On the other hand, those who want to experience the best film of the franchise can enjoy the uncut version of the fantastic “The Bourne Ultimatum” starting at 10:35 PM.

“Jason Bourne”: Solid, but not a worthy finale

After Jeremy Renner’s guest appearance in the fourth film, star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass returned for “Jason Bourne” to continue the story of the man with whom it all began.

However, times have changed. The Internet is no longer just a sign of progress; in the age of whistleblower Edward Snowden, it has also become an increasing threat – for government agencies like the CIA. When a data leak occurs one day, Bourne’s former ally Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) quickly comes under the agency’s radar. She thus teams up again with her former companion – aware of the latest spy program that is far more dangerous than the one in which Jason Bourne was once trained…

With 3 out of 5 stars, “Jason Bourne” receives a solid rating in the FILMSTARTS review, but it also makes it the weakest part of the series – and a somewhat unworthy conclusion that leaves hopes that the sixth film will indeed come to fruition. And that Jason Bourne will then receive a farewell he truly deserves.

Damon and Greengrass, who also collaborated on the Iraq War thriller “Green Zone,” deliver once again a well-crafted action film from a technical perspective. However, content-wise, it is “neither particularly inspired nor original,” as noted in our review. Especially since the film “ends somewhat in neutral,” there is hope that “Bourne 6” can help steer the acclaimed espionage franchise back on course.
