Coach Kyle Shanahan stated that the 49ers have an open-ended expectation for Verrett, and he will have to earn his spot on the team by proving himself on the practice field.
Verrett had a brief stint with the Houston Texans’ practice squad earlier this season before joining the 49ers. His return to the team was not related to cornerback Charvarius Ward’s injury and was in the works before Ward’s ailment.
The hope is that Verrett can provide valuable depth behind the team’s top three cornerbacks. In 2020, he had a strong season with 13 starts and two interceptions. He was also a starter at the beginning of the 2021 season but suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the opener.
Despite his injury history, the 49ers are giving Verrett another opportunity to contribute to the team. They believe he can be a valuable asset if he can stay healthy and return to form.
