The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences initially determined the Java earthquake to have jolted Java, Indonesia at 2123 GMT on Friday, with its epicenter at a depth of 371.5 km and located at 5.11 degrees south latitude and 106.91 degrees east longitude. Subsequent updates from the German Research Center for Geosciences recorded the Java earthquake on Saturday at a depth of 376 km (234 miles).
The Java event followed a separate seismic disturbance in eastern Indonesia just one day prior. On Friday evening, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Banda Sea in eastern Indonesia, with tremors felt across parts of Maluku. Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Earthquake and Tsunami Director Wijayanto stated that the quake occurred at 6.56 pm local time at a depth of 148 kilometres, with its epicentre located 162 kilometres northeast of Southwest Maluku. Indonesia’s geophysics agency also noted that the Banda Sea earthquake occurred at a depth of 143 km (89 miles). Wijayanto explained that the earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth and was caused by subduction activity in the Banda Sea, with the movement occurring along a thrust fault.

The two weekend tremors highlighted Indonesia’s complex tectonic setting, though they differed in depth and local impact. While the Java earthquake occurred at a depth of 376 km, Friday’s Banda Sea event struck at an intermediate depth, sending strong tremors in Amahai in Central Maluku, as well as Damer and the Babar Islands in Southwest Maluku, while weaker tremors were reported in Saumlaki and Tiakur.
