The Aragonese comedian Javier Coronas, together with Javier Cansado and Pepe Colubi, celebrates this season the 15th anniversary of Illustrious Ignorantsone of the longest-running formats on television.
In a medium that seems to demand constant innovation such as television, what is the key to lasting 15 years with exactly the same format without signs of exhaustion?
The main key is that the chain in which you work renews your contract. In Illustrious I think the freshness is maintained because there is no script, neither for us nor for the guests, and that is why the format has remained fresh and has not been modified in all this time.
From the outside, the chemistry between the three regulars also seems key. Do you remember how the team was formed?
Originally the only one who was going to be permanent was me, but I said that Javi (Cansado) and Pepe (Colubi) should always come, that there should be more of them carrying the load, along with the guests who came, so as not to have too much new people every program. It is one of the best decisions I have made in my life.
How do you choose the guests, do you agree between the three of you?
There is a little bit of everything, sometimes someone has discovered someone who can fit into the program and proposes it, other times someone we wanted to bring signs up, and there are others that we want them to repeat, because they are friends and good people and there is a love, which are also other keys why the program works.
Is there anyone who resists them?
There are many that we have not been able to bring, because we have not been able to locate them, or because it has not coincided, or because the agendas are complicated. For example, Javier Bardem, or Alcaraz, are difficult. Furthermore, the program is not promotional, which does not help to get people to come when they are on that type of tour.
Is there any that has surprised you especially for the better in these 15 years?
I couldn’t say one, we have had almost a thousand guests at this time, nine hundred and something, and it would be unfair on my part. Yes, I can name Pepín Tre, who is the one who has repeated the most and is the fourth musketeer (he always participates in the first programs of each season, among other times).
They went from doing a monthly program to biweekly, then weekly… Don’t they ask you to do a longer format, which sometimes tastes like little?
The format has to be as it is, it is good that people don’t know much and are left wanting more, but the duration of about 45 minutes is ideal, and everyone’s goal is always to work as little as possible.
You have already reached 15 years, have you set your goal to surpass ‘To know and to win‘ or ‘Weekly Report’ as the longest-running format on television?
Ours has no merit compared to them, To know and to win It is a daily format and Weekly report It’s informative, they beat us by a landslide. We are not proposing any of that because, as I said, the idea in Illustrious It is working little.
