After strong criticism back and forth for his political currents, the elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei, surprised by inviting the Colombian president Gustavo Petro to his inauguration on December 10.

Petro, who in several messages on his X account (formerly Twitter) has criticized Milei, even comparing him to Hitler, would have already received the formal invitation to the inauguration ceremony in Buenos Aires. The head of state would be reconsidering his attendance in the midst of his participation in the COP28 in Dubai.

“The invitation is transmitted to your head of State and/or Government or your high authorities to participate in the official activities planned for said occasion,” says the letter released by RCN Radio.

Neither Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva nor President Petro have responded whether or not they are going to the event in which Milei will assume power in Argentina after the government of Alberto Fernández.

Milei won the victory on November 19 in the Argentine runoff against the current Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa. 55.7% of Argentines decided to lean towards the anti-system’s promises of change, against the 44.3% who voted for Massa, identified as one of the main people responsible for the inflationary crisis in that country.

Milei also invited leaders from the region who are contrary to his ideology to his inauguration, such as the Chilean Gabriel Boric (who has already confirmed his attendance) and the Brazilian Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

As the time comes to assume the reins of a nation in crisis, Milei made one of the most anticipated announcements: the name of who will receive the “hot potato” from the Ministry of Economy: Luis Caputo, former Minister of Finance during the government of Mauritius Macri.
