Chennai High Court

The High Court on Wednesday dismissed an appeal filed by the AIADMK against a separate judge’s order quashing the conversion of Jayalalithaa’s house into a memorial house.

Ordinances were issued during the AIADMK regime to convert the Vedha Center in Boise Estate, owned by the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, into a memorial house.

Following this, the trial court judge N. Seshasai, who was hearing the case of Jayalalithaa’s nephew Deepa and son Deepak in the Chennai High Court, quashed the ordinance and set it on fire last month.

AIADMK, Jayalalithaa Memorial Trust member and former minister CV Shanmugam had filed an appeal in the Chennai High Court against this.

The apex court comprising Justices Paresh Upadhyay and Sathikuma Sukumara Kurup heard the appeal filed in the AIADMK case.

After hearing the arguments of AIADMK and Deepa last Monday, the verdict was read out this morning.

In this case, the judges said:

Jayalalithaa’s house has been taken over for political reasons without any public purpose. Where there is already a memorial, a second memorial is unnecessary.

Further, the appellate court dismissed the case on the ground that the judgment of the separate judge was admissible.
