Jeff Bezos completes space flight on his New Shepard spacecraft

by time news

The New Shepard, carrying billionaire Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark and two more passengers, has completed a flight into space. The capsule with space travelers has successfully landed with the help of parachutes. The flight took just over 10 minutes.

The New Shepard rocket took off on a suborbital flight from a private spaceport in Texas, owned by Bezos himself. The flight was broadcast live on the BlueOrigin website. The launch was timed to coincide with the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing.

According to the company’s calculations, the capsule with passengers was supposed to reach an altitude of 115 kilometers. The entire flight was fully automatic.

Together with Bezos and his brother, 82-year-old pilot Wally Funk and 18-year-old Oliver Deemen, son of the founder of the Dutch company Somerset Capital Partners, took part in the flight. They became the oldest and youngest person to have been in space.

BlueOrigin has conducted 15 New Shepard launches, of which 14 were successful. Moreover, this flight was the first with passengers on board. The design of the apparatus is such that in an emergency situation, the capsule moves away from the rocket. After landing, both the rocket and the capsule can be reused.
