ESPN Letting Go NBA Analyst Jeff Van Gundy in Company-wide Layoffs
ESPN, one of the leading sports networks, has reportedly laid off one of its all-time great NBA on-air game analysts, Jeff Van Gundy, as part of their ongoing layoffs affecting every corner of the company. Andrew Marchand of the New York Post revealed that Van Gundy is among approximately 20 on-air personalities being let go in an effort to save money. Although the specific details of Van Gundy’s salary are unknown, it is reported that he “made millions,” according to the Post.
Van Gundy, 61, has been a key member of ESPN’s No. 1 broadcast team for 16 years, alongside Mark Jackson and play-by-play commentator Mike Breen. Considered one of the best analysts in his field, his departure marks yet another setback for ESPN, which has been forced to make cuts since February. The layoffs came after Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, announced a plan to slash 7,000 jobs across ESPN and Disney, aiming to save $5.5 billion. This has resulted in numerous job losses across different levels of ESPN, from writers and editors to long-time executives, and now on-air talent.
ESPN’s decision to part ways with Van Gundy is part of an initiative to cut high-earning personalities and prioritize cost-cutting.
