BOLZANO. The meeting between Jeffrey D. Sachsuniversity professor and director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, and Arno Kompatscherhad as its central theme global challenges and the importance of sustainable development.

Professor Sachs, who has served as an advisor to three United Nations Secretaries-General, has contributed significantly to the formulation and implementation of the “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) delle Nazioni Unite. In the interview, he outlined the five key theses that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. The United Nations member states adopted the goals in 2015. Among other things, they aim to end poverty, protect the planet and promote prosperity for all. Specific goals must be achieved by 2030.

In his conversation with the President of the Province, Professor Sachs explained that sustainable development requires global funding, especially for education, healthcare, renewable energy and digital infrastructure. In light of the competition for power, especially between the United States, Russia and China, a stronger system of international relations regulation, led by the United Nations, is needed to establish and secure peace.

Regarding new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology, Professor Sachs calls for transparency and good governance to maximize public benefits.

Professor Sachs cites global financing mechanisms as a prerequisite to ensuring that every child has access to quality education. As a fifth thesis, the scientist calls for a more representative and better-funded UN that no longer depends on a few powerful countries. He proposed international taxes to ensure the financial stability of the UN and the introduction of a parliamentary assembly that represents all peoples.

Sachs then spoke about the Summit of the Future (SOTF)which will be held at the United Nations on 22 and 23 September. This summit, called by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, aims to promote global cooperation. “The SOTF offers the opportunity to work together on the global solutions needed for sustainable development in the 21st century,” explained Professor Sachs. Kompatscher emphasized: “Our world is complex and deeply interconnected, and only by working together can we address the great challenges of our time.”
