In relation to the controversy surrounding the sale of big meat chunks of pork belly at a famous meat restaurant on Jeju Island, Jeju Island Governor Oh Young-hoon announced that he would strengthen guidance and supervision of restaurants. However, Governor Oh requested that differences in food culture be also taken into consideration.
At a press conference on the 2nd, Governor Oh said regarding the controversy over ‘non-fat pork belly’, “We are considering ways to strengthen publicity through the hygiene-related department to prevent similar problems from occurring in restaurants, and we have begun inspections.”
He continued, “First of all, we are internally reviewing the need to strengthen guidance and supervision in the livestock sector.”
However, Governor Oh emphasized, “There are aspects of cooking that make it difficult to take an excessive approach to issues related to business operations conducted at the private level,” and “the fact that there may be differences in the food culture itself must also be taken into account.”
This controversy arose after Mr. A, who visited a famous Jeju meat restaurant in an online community last month, posted a message saying, “The restaurant is selling big meat chunks of pork belly.”
According to the article, Mr. A said that he recently visited a meat restaurant in Seogwipo City, Jeju Island with his younger brother. This was a safe restaurant provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and was famous enough for celebrities to visit.
However, the meat Mr. A received at the restaurant was pork belly piled with chunks of beef. Mr. A raised the issue, but the restaurant reportedly said it was normal meat and took no action.
Mr. A said, “I was so upset that I ate 3 pieces of meat and left after paying about 150,000 won.” He added, “It is ridiculous that a piece of beef costs a whopping 150,000 won. In fact, there were a few people who suffered the same problem as me in the reviews, but business is good and due to the nature of Jeju tourists, they think they will never come back once they go, so I think they are doing business like that unscrupulously,” he said angrily.
According to the ‘Pork Belly Quality Control Manual’ published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, it is recommended that fat should be managed below 1 cm for pork belly and 1.5 cm for ogyeopsal. Additionally, it is recommended that parts with excessive fat be discarded.
It was revealed that the pork belly served at the restaurant did not meet the pork belly standards recommended by the manual.
