Finally good news for the capital’s theater: Jens Harzer, holder of the Iffland Ring, is moving to the Berliner Ensemble – and he’s not coming alone. However, the question remains how often we will see him at BE.
In football you would call it a “royal transfer”: Jens Harzer is moving to the Berliner Ensemble next year. Marina Galic, his wife, from the Hamburg Thalia Theater ensemble is also coming to the capital with Harzer. Harzer and Galic are often on stage together, for example in the dark three-person “Macbeth” from Bochum, which can be seen at the Theatertreffen this year, and in the wonderfully twisted “Das Leben ein Traum” from Hamburg.
It’s finally good news again for the Berliner Ensemble: Recently, a crazy sprinkler system went off – during the break in a performance! – the large hall is under water, the stage and technology were damaged, normal play operations are currently not possible. The fact that the bearer of the famous Iffland Ring, which was presented to Harzer by Bruno Ganz, will soon be seen on this stage is a reason for joy not only for the director Oliver Reese, but also for the Berlin theater audience.
Harzer will continue to be seen on other major stages
Almost at the same time it became known that the Berliner Ensemble was losing a familiar face: Stefanie Reinsperger – who, among other things, performed furiously in Thomas Bernhard’s “The Theater Maker” – would be moving back to the ensemble at Vienna’s Burgtheater. And Harzer? He plays Hamlet in the opening production directed by Stefan Bachmann. As you can hear, Harzer also received an offer to move permanently to Vienna, but he chose Berlin.
It is not to be expected that Harzer will take on one leading role after another at the Berliner Ensemble. That wasn’t the case with Joachim Meyerhoff at the Schaubühne either. Harzer is also known for only playing a few selected productions. He will also continue to be seen on other major stages – such as the Burgtheater. It is conceivable that Harzer will also succeed in luring his esteemed director Johan Simons to Berlin, who otherwise tends to avoid the Spree metropolis. That would be further good news for the Berlin theater.
