At the Republican Party Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, CDU parliamentary group vice-chair Jens Spahn accused the traffic light coalition of not adequately preparing for a possible new term of office for Donald Trump. He made this statement in a podcast by “Bild” journalist Paul Ronzheimer. He particularly criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), who continues to openly show his support for the current American President Joe Biden, despite his declining chances of re-election.
Spahn emphasized the need for the federal government to remain in dialogue with both political parties in the USA. He particularly criticized the Chancellor’s strong focus on Biden as a risky strategy. “That is irresponsible,” said Spahn.
After the assassination attempt on Trump, several heads of government, including from Canada and Great Britain, contacted him. According to Spahn, it was unclear whether Scholz was one of them. However, he emphasized the importance of personal relationships and statements for Trump and that he would notice who would contact him after such an incident and who would not.
Biden is currently behind Trump in polls, but Scholz is still supporting him. At a European summit in Oxford, Scholz described the race as open and warned against drawing hasty conclusions about the outcome of the election. He recalled the last federal election, in which many observers were wrong. Scholz apparently does not yet see Biden as politically defeated.
