Currently, JIA specializes in these restomods – essentially British interpretations of American pro-touring muscle cars – built on the existing Interceptor platform. These vehicles are available in saloon or convertible body styles, powered by either a naturally aspirated GM LS3 V8 or a supercharged LT4 V8, both paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. however, the forthcoming GT car represents a significant departure.
According to a company release, the new Interceptor will be a completely new vehicle, featuring an aluminum chassis and modern styling. While details remain scarce, a single side profile teaser image reveals a contemporary design that still strongly echoes the original Interceptor’s silhouette. JIA intends to build the new car in the U.K. under a new division of the company, positioning it as a limited-production vehicle.
The potential for a modern interpretation of the Interceptor is notably exciting given the original’s history with American V8 engines. The classic Interceptor, like many British cars of its era, was often equipped with Chrysler-supplied V8s. This precedent allows JIA considerable adaptability in choosing a powerplant for the new model, potentially utilizing any modern American V8 while remaining true to the original formula. JIA has stated the new car will feature a “bespoke V8,” leaving room for speculation ranging from a modified GM engine to a more exotic configuration.
However, one analyst noted the critical difference between announcing a new GT car and actually delivering a production vehicle. This isn’t the first attempt to revive the Interceptor. In 2011, CPP Global Holdings announced plans for a modern, retro-inspired version, but the project ultimately failed to materialize beyond initial promises and renderings.
